I'm a 90's kid who still steals moments away from a screen whenever I can. So when I'm not scrolling through spreadsheets and fixing numbers that don't add up, I'm off in someone else's crime scene, chasing a different kind of pattern than the ones in my spreadsheets. Somewhere between a psychological thriller and a book on human behavior, I found my actual genre: things that don't add up until the last page.
And when even books feel too close to a desk, I go find the road instead, on four wheels or two. A long drive, or a cycle ride before the city's awake. That's the only screen free time I protect on purpose. No idea why, but it works every time. Whatever's on my mind just goes quiet.

Maybe You Should Talk to Someone
This is the closest I've come to sitting in on a real therapy session without paying for one. Gottlieb is a therapist who writes about her patients, then turns the mirror on herself and shares her own sessions as a patient. Somewhere in the mix of stories, at least one will feel uncomfortably close to something you've felt yourself.

Storytelling with Data
If you've ever had to present a number to management, a client, or anyone who doesn't live inside your spreadsheet, this book is for you. Knaflic argues that white space on a slide isn't wasted space, it's room for the reader to breathe and actually notice what you're trying to say. I haven't built a chart the same way since.
How to Talk to Anyone
If you've ever wanted to walk into a room and actually be remembered for the right reasons, this is basically a field manual for that. Lowndes breaks conversation and first impressions down into small, specific habits instead of vague advice like "just be more confident." Half the tricks sound too simple to work. Then you try them, and they do.
Everybody Lies
Google knew about a health issue you're worried about before you'd even said it out loud to anyone, and this book is full of uncomfortable little facts exactly like that. Stephens-Davidowitz uses search data to show what people actually think and do, as opposed to what they'll admit in a survey, and the gap between the two is bigger and stranger than you'd expect. Reads less like a data book and more like very well argued gossip.
